The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a national helpline providing confidential and free referral services. By calling 1-800-662-HELP, you can learn about addiction recovery programs, rehabilitation specialists, and drug rehabilitation facilities near you.
But what about the cost? While the referral service is free, the rehabilitation services are not. With or without insurance you can still find help for addiction recovery.
Types of Drug Rehabilitation Facilities
As of 2021, the average cost of rehab treatment varies greatly. The type of treatment given plays a huge part in determining cost, but it can range from a few hundred dollars for one day or up to $27,000 for a 30-day program.
Inpatient vs Outpatient
An inpatient addiction recovery program is going to cost more than an outpatient one. Inpatient facilities offer room and board in addition to treatment from on-site specialists, which can include the following:
- Detoxification
- Therapy
- Medication
Outpatient programs are ones in which the person working on recovery attends their appointments while still living at home. Instead of staying on-site at a facility, the patient can develop a schedule that consists of day-time attendance that doesn’t disrupt their work schedule.
Duration of Treatment
Many addiction recovery programs last a minimum of 30 days but may extend for 90 or more. The duration, as well as the type of treatment, also significantly affects the pricing.
Average Cost of 30-Day Rehab (inpatient)
$400 – $900 per day
Average Cost of 60-Day Rehab (inpatient)
$300 – $800 per day
Average Cost of 90-Day Rehab (inpatient)
$200 – $700 per day
Average Cost of 30-Day Rehab (outpatient)
Up to $10,000 per month for treatment five days per week
Average Cost of Intensive, 30-Day Rehab (outpatient)
Up to $11,000 per month for treatment five days per week
Average Cost of Inpatient-Outpatient Hybrid care (30 Days)
Up to $20,000 per month for three days inpatient and the rest outpatient
Location
As with real estate, location plays a part in the cost of a rehab program. Some centers are remotely located to help physically remove patients from their regular surroundings, while others are centrally located for convenient outpatient programs. You may need a drug rehabilitation facility that focuses on a certain form of treatment, but it’s farther away from where you live, affecting the cost.
Amenities
It might seem strange to consider amenities at a rehab facility, but they do factor into the overall cost of getting treatment. Some places may offer recreational activities to keep patients socializing during recovery. Art classes, a fitness center, and even a pool may influence the cost of treatment.
Additional Costs of Rehab Facilities
Additionally, the cost of treatment nationwide is affected by the level of care offered; some facilities offer intensive, daily therapy schedules, while others scale it back to once per week. Additional costs on the administrative side also add up, so be aware of the following expenses to consider:
Admission Fees
It can cost up to $4,000 to simply be admitted to a rehab facility.
Detoxification Care
If not already included, detox can run up to $4,000 for one week.
Prescribed Medications
If a treatment plan includes medication, the cost can vary widely based on what is needed.
Extended Care
It is possible to extend your stay for addiction recovery, but the daily rate may be more than the monthly rate.
After Care
Follow-up care after completing a rehab program is important for success. Some 12-step programs are free, while other patients may choose sober living housing after inpatient programs. Depending on where you live and the type of aftercare you seek, this is another cost that can fluctuate drastically.
Paying for Drug Rehabilitation
Solida Health and Wellness doesn’t want cost to prevent anyone from attending a rehabilitation program when needed. If you cannot pay for everything out of pocket, or your insurance doesn’t offer enough assistance, the Solida Foundation offers scholarships for drug recovery programs thanks to private donations and partnerships with rehabilitation agencies.
Does Insurance Pay for Rehab?
Depending on your insurance provider, you may be able to get some of your rehabilitation expenses covered. However, there will likely be copays and/or deductibles to meet for various forms of treatment, including therapy, medication, and inpatient stays. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, all health insurance plans are required to offer some coverage for mental health treatment.
Payment Plans
When choosing a facility for treatment, be sure to look at what types of payment plans they offer While not a requirement, some do have financing options to make treatment financially feasible.
Scholarships Offered by the Solida Foundation
An individual selected by Solida for subsidized rehabilitation care is eligible for the following scholarships for treatment:
- $10,000 for residential treatment (inpatient program of at least 60 days)
- $3,000 for sober living expenses
- $2,000 for therapy
- $2,000 for optional educational/vocational needs
These scholarships are to total no more than $15,000, and the person in recovery will be matched with the rehab facility that is right for them.
